Much
like Chopper, Stakeout was
based on one of the more ubiquitous Action Force moulds. The
figure originated as the 1982 British Commando figure, and was used
three times for the 1983/84 line - as the SAS Boat Patrol figure (Stakeout),
as the carded SAS Commando (Quickfire, near-identical apart from having
grey camouflage added) and the Z Force Sapper.
As mentioned
above, Stakeout was originally sold bundled as part of the SAS Boat
Patrol - basically a black tray with a gun mounted on it. In the comic
Stakeout was SAS Force leader Eagle's
right hand man, though his codename was usually ignored in favour of
calling him 'Jones'.
The figure
itself is generally nicely done. It's a decent mould and nicely detailed
- the predominantly black commando togs work well for the SAS, with
the bullet belts adding just the right amount of visual variety without
rendering the uniform impractical for sneaking around and blowing stuff
up.
Sadly,
the figure's hat wears very easily, but aside from this the biggest
fault is the backpack. While the straps for the figure's M60 are a neat
touch, the thing just doesn't fit over the grenades moulded on the chest
very well, and always seems to want to ride up. On the other hand, the
M60 fits nicely in the arms, and you can always jettison the backpack
entirely. On the balance, despite his faults, Stakeout is probably the
best all-round SAS figure.
